Tahitian Pearls From Mexico By http://www.diamondhome.info
The Tahitian Pearl sometimes called the "Black Pearl", although not grown in Tahiti, is cultured in French Polynesia. And Tahiti is part of that group of islands, even though they don't culture pearls in Tahiti. The islands are not called the Tahitian Islands but French Polynesia. This group of islands is the largest grower of the "Black lipped" pearl oysters (Pinctada margaritifera). This oyster grows wild from the Persian Gulf, the Indian Ocean to the Central Pacific Ocean. They live in the latitudes just north of the Equator. And just so you won't think I am telling stories, there are "Black Pearls" growing in the Eastern Pacific, near to Baja California and south to Peru, called La Paz pearl oysters (Pinctada mazatlanica). And the Rainbow-lipped pearl oyster (Pteria sterna). And these 2 different oysters also produce a dark bodied pearl sometimes sold as "Black Pearls". Sometimes the pearls from the Rain-bow lipped oyster are called
"Rainbow Pearls". The well known Black Pearl Tahitian is the only one of these 3 that is being mass produced. There are start up operations of pearl culturing in the Americas, not of any scale compared to the Tahitian Pearls. At one time the Americas were the place of a huge scale pearling operation, when the Spanish in their quest for gold, silver, emeralds and pearls that they stripped from the Americas, took tons and tons of pearls from the Americas, including a large white pearling operation in the Caribbean. The "Black Pearls", mentioned above are the only natural"black pearl"; all other black pearls are either dyed or irradiated, as in the Akoya, and Freshwater Black Pearls.
